Good Night’s Sleep, 2024

Recycled materials, fabrics, and yarns

Good Night’s Sleep is a 3-piece sculptural garment that emulates a caterpillar awaiting its metamorphosis. The project began with the artist’s philosophical question: “How would I visualize change in a living form?” Park explores the answers to portray the impact of change in life, believing that change inevitably involves many layers of both negative and positive emotions simultaneously. She found an intriguing parallel in nature, using metamorphosis as a device to convey emotions like hope, fear, uncertainty, desire, excitement, frustration, and challenges. How do we, as humans, deal with change?

The artist believes that human beings spiritually grow until death. In this performance, the caterpillar takes various gestures as it sleeps—whether in a good night’s sleep, a nightmare, or full rest. Dreams and fantasies arise when our bodies seem physically still and lifeless. Then, what is the difference between life and death? How do dreams differ from reality? Can you tell whether you’re growing or dying?

Instead of getting lost in such confusion, perhaps we can reflect on our younger days, imagining ourselves full of hope and aspirations for the future. Just as in childhood, let’s embrace the transition through time with hope and optimism.
